Guan Yin is an east Asian Bodhisattva associated with compassion and revered as the goddess of mercy. Bodhi means wisdom or enlightenment and sattva means being of essence. In Buddhism, Bodhisattva is a person who despite the ability to attain nivana, delays it to serve those beings who are suffering.
A Bodhisattva is not a deity but a spiritually advanced human being, anyone can become a Bodhisattva regardless of appearance, race or gender. Whenever you act in accordance with a natural impulse of compassion you take one step further to being a Bodhisattva.
